RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

It’s been a few years since we were able to take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch. At this time of year, we’re usually off on our travels so it was nice to take part this morning and spend an hour recording our avian visitors.

As it happened, we had a good show with goldfinch, blackbird, jay, blue tit, coal tit, long-tailed tit, great-spotted woodpecker, bullfinch, greenfinch, dunnock, tree sparrow, wood pigeon, magpie, stock dove, carrion crow, chaffinch, pheasant and robin.

The goldfinches were particularly active around the nyjer seed and unusually defensive. The jay almost cleaned me out of peanuts, stacking them into his crop and returning for more a quarter of an hour later.

For some reason, we lost our tree sparrows for a few months last year but now there are three. We hope that the Spring brings more back to the garden.

There are a few images on the site, all taken this weekend, under the Big Garden Birdwatch post.
