Barn owl

My friend David has barn owls in the field next to his house in Hillam, near Selby.  Apparently, the barn owls have kicked out the kestrels from their box, so the kestrels have occupied the barn owl box.  I went across one morning last week and managed to get these few fairly average shots before they went to bed.  I also had a trip across to Hillam a couple of evenings ago but the light dropped and there was no sign.  I did see a brown hare sitting in the field so take a look at that instead…

As an aside, when I was out walking a couple of weeks ago, I met a couple of people who have seen barn owls within half a mile of our house in Kirkheaton, Huddersfield.  The sightings have been confirmed by the farm manager who managed to get photos on his phone.  This was over a year ago so nobody knows if they are still about.  However, this gives me hope that they might return so I’ve bought a box on the off-chance a pair might look for a home around here, next year.  I had no idea we had barn owls so close.
