The sweet sound of a goldcrest flitting about in a large spruce in our garden sent me for my camera. He was still there when I got back and was happy to pose for a few pics. But then he was there the next day and the day after – as was the female and one of their youngsters. They were very trusting and unconcerned about my presence or the sound of my DSLR, one even coming down close by for a bath in the stream. It was that great app, Merlin, that first alerted me to their presence. Merlin picked up his singing as I was listening to the birds in the garden a few weeks ago and then, becoming familiar with his song, I heard him again. Now I hope they will be a constant presence in our big spruce trees.
