In and around the garden of our friends’ home in Davenport, California, there is an ever-changing selection of birds. Here are a singing Pacific wren, house finch, male western bluebird, fox sparrow (with its long claws, perfect for scratching earth), scrub jay, Cooper’s hawk, red-breasted sapsucker, pine siskin, song sparrow, American robin, female western bluebird, California towhee and white-crowned sparrow. And it wouldn’t be a show without Punch – otherwise known as Frittata, the only surviving but very well-looked after chicken!
