Namib Desert Beetle

This beetle seems to be variously known as a Namib Desert Beetle or a Racing Stripe Darkling Beetle.  Notice how it is frantically shifting sand, presumably to get under for protection from the heat or to look for food, although I’d be pretty interested to see what he found in such a place as the Deadvlei, below Big Daddy in the dunes of Sossusvlei. With the scarcity of water in the desert, these beetles have learned to stand on their heads so that the mist gathers on their bodies and runs down to their mouths, allowing them to drink.
