I was looking for a bobcat for the whole of my stay at Swanton Road in California. They tend to hunt just before sunrise until around midnight and then again in the early morning. I had seen one on my last visit so checked that area every day. Just before we were due to leave, I was driving home just after sunset, when I saw this fine specimen sitting in the orchard, not far from where I last saw one. The bobcat is of the lynx family, about twice the size of a domestic cat but able to prey on animals much bigger than itself. The animal was unperturbed by my presence as I lay flat on the grass with my lens poking through the wire fence.
