This little guy, an anole lizard, inaccurately known as the American chameleon, crossed in front of us on a boardwalk at the Six Mile Cypress Slough wildlife preserve, Florida, and then proceeded to change colour in the space of a minute. He had come from an area of greenery and was heading towards bracken-like undergrowth which might explain the change. However, as with most nature, this explanation is not necessarily true as research suggests all manner of other reasons why they might change colour, including stress or as a ‘social signal’.
