A pelican’s bill can hold more than its belican

On an otherwise quiet evening looking out from Ding Darling nature preserve, Sanibel Island, Florida, a brown pelican caught a fish. The fish was massive and the pelican couldn’t swallow it. In fact, it was so big, it could hardly carry it. The brown pelican’s plight was noticed by an American white pelican, at just twice the weight of the brown. The white pelican tried to muscle in on the catch by wrapping its bill around the bill of the brown. There came a time when the white pelican was almost completely underwater as it wrestled with the brown. The brown pelican kept its catch and eventually escaped, although we never learned whether it was able to consume the fish. In any event, it made for interesting viewing. Here are some of the pictures.
