Monarch butterfly

Monarch butterflies near Santa Cruz, CA.  These Monarchs spend the winter on the Californian coast, and in March/April, head north and east where they lay their eggs.  Each generation lives for about 8 months and the Monarchs that return to California in the Autumn are the great great grandchildren of these you see here.  The one in the spider’s web was rewarded with freedom after it struggled for some time to free itself.
