Magellanic Woodpecker

The most southerly town in the world is Ushuaia in Argentina, ‘the end of the world’.  A few miles out of town is the Tierra Del Fuego national park, home to many species of wildlife. Everyone visiting the park wants to see the male Magellanic Woodpecker, well known for its beautiful red head.  We spent the whole of the day searching for it and, as we were about to leave, a young woman told us she had seen one not too far away.  We set off up a track indicated to us and on our return to find our car, my wife spotted the female.  As I was shooting the female, this male appeared at the bottom of the tree.  Magnificent and well worth the search!
