Limpkin

Limpkin feeding on a snail at Joe Overstreet Landing,  and another at Kissimmee Lake, Florida.  The limpkin’s diet is predominantly apple snails with a shell the size of a tennis ball.  You can see an invasive channelled apple snail shell at the feet of the feeding limpkin and attached to the tree above water are the eggs of the same snail.  The limpkin  was unable to swallow the snail whole and spent a good twenty minutes pummelling and shaking the snail to tear off smaller pieces.
