It’s been a brilliant year for goldfinches. Yesterday, we counted twenty four busily emptying our feeders. With a little assistance from greenfinches and nuthatches, they’re getting through two sunflower heart hoppers and a pile of niger seeds in just over 24 hours. Tree sparrows have also done well and, today, we counted five buzzards soaring overhead. Yesterday, a beautiful young sparrow hawk was sitting in the twisted willow where the feeders hang. The juvenile great spotted woodpecker is, at this moment, calling from his post right at the top of one of the sycamores. On our walk, this afternoon, a kestrel sauntered past and landed on a nearby post. Add on the great, blue, coal and long-tailed tits, the pheasants, doves, pigeons, magpies, blackbirds that visit the garden every day and there is never a dull moment here.
